Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Locke Funeral Home with military rites by the United States Navy, American Legion Post # 138 and VFW Post #1623

Visitation:
Monday, Sept. 11, at Locke Funeral Home.

Cemetery:
Inurnment will be at a later date in the Garden of Memories Cemetery

Memorials:
In lieu of flowers, memorials are directed to the Friendship Village Building Fund, 600 Park Lane, Waterloo, Iowa 50702

Biography--

Daniel Allen Gates, 67, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday, September 8, 2017 at Mayo Clinic-St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, of heart failure.

He was born January 26, 1950, in Waterloo, son of Lewis W. and Marie M. Gibson Gates.

He married Lisa Armstrong January 26, 1974, at Olivet Baptist Church in Honolulu, Hawaii.

He graduated from West High School in 1968, received his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and his Master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

Dan worked as a marriage and family counselor at Gate's Counseling, which he owned and operated in Waterloo. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was involved in Batterer’s Education Program, a member of the Friendship Village Chorus and also taught Sunday School over the years. For over 30 years, Dan was actively involved in Child Evangelism Fellowship.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa; two daughters, Katie Gates of Waterloo and Suzie (Seth) Hall of Elgin, OK; four grandchildren: Kennedy, Reagan, Jackson and Jacob; two brothers, David (Sue) Gates of Vinton, IA and John (Alice) Gates of Perris, CA; a sister, Mary Lou Lindsey of Brooksville, FL; and a sister in law, Patricia Gates of Virginia Beach, VA.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Donnabelle Gates and June Fuller; and a brother, Ralph Gates.

Dan dedicated his life to helping others: His first thought was always, “How can I take care of you.” He will always be loved by his family and friends.
