Obituary for Nancy Gleason Benton
CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Nancy Gleason Benton, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, September 3 at Sartori Memorial Hospital, in Cedar Falls, due to complications from illness.
She was born in 1928, in Mt. Union, Iowa, daughter of Ruth and Merle Lauer. She married Alonzo “Lon” James Gleason Jr. on January 31, 1953 in Mt Union. He died April 23, 1991. She then married Robert Forrest Benton on June 17, 1995 in Cedar Falls.
Nancy graduated from the University of Northern Iowa and taught Physical Education with the Cedar Falls Schools for 30 years at Lincoln, Southdale, Valley Park, and Humbert elementary schools. She was a member of TTT and served on the Cedar Falls Parks and Recreation Commission.
Survived by: her husband; two daughters, Ann Gleason Swisher (Phil) of Cedar Falls and Jane Gleason Swieter (John) of Plano, TX; daughter-in-law, Alison Gleason of Edina, MN; three stepchildren, Denise Benton Young (Ken) of San Diego, CA, Chuck Benton (Chris) of Cedar Falls, and John “Bugs” Benton (Susan Rolinger) of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren: Amy (Amy Lynn) Swisher, Paul (Mariah) Swisher, Jens Swieter, Ben, Charlie and Lucy Gleason; six step grandchildren: Sarah and Lizzy Young, Kara Peeples, Forrest and Holli Benton, Dolores “Dee Dee” Benton; two great grandchildren, Anderson LouAnn Swisher and Justin Thomas Swisher; a sister, Shirley Johnson of Grand Rapids, MN; and a brother-in-law, Robert Gleason (Jean) of Georgetown, TX.
Preceded in death by: a son, James “Scott” Gleason; and a stepdaughter, Diane Benton Peeples.
Services: 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Richardson Funeral Service with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Nancy loved spending time with family and friends. She loved teaching and her students. She enjoyed summers at the cabin in Minnesota, traveling, and spending time in the garden with her flowers. Her parting words of advice were: take care of each other, be kind and have courage.
