Waterloo, IowaLeone Beatrice Brant was born March 27, 1923, in Poplar Township, Minnesota, daughter of Harley and Bertha (Johnson) Howe. She was raised in Cass County and graduated from high school in Backus, Minnesota. Leone attended business college in Minneapolis/St. Paul.
She met Kenneth Brant (their mothers were close friends) and they dated at a time when barn dances brought the community together on a weekly basis. The two were wed and bought a farm in the Poplar Township area. Leone and Kenneth moved to Montana for a short while then to Waterloo where he worked for Rath Packing. Leone was very civic minded and worked for the election board for years as well as with community development.
She was a dedicated mother and her family was her passion. As the “Queen” Leone could be found at the center of most of the family gatherings. She was an avid gardener growing beautiful flowers and bountiful vegetables which were canned or frozen to feed her large family.
Leone passed away at home at the age of 94 years on Sunday, August 20, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2000; her son, Kenneth Larue Brant; her daughter, Juanita Brant; and 2 brothers, Howard and Robert Howe. Leone is survived by her son, Duane Brant of Waterloo; 4 daughters, Lorraine (Tom) Gibbons of Elk Run Heights, Kathy (Brian) McBride of Waterloo, Mary (Rick) Wersinger of Waterloo, Helen Cochran (Bret Wittmayer) of Waterloo; 1 brother, Maurice Howe of Crystal, MN; 1 sister, Lucille Coleman of Crystal, MN; 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
