Biography--

Donald J. “Don” Verbeck, 93, of Waterloo, died Saturday, August 19, 2017 at his home.

Don was born March 17, 1924 in Hazelton, IA the son of August and Florence Harper Verbeck. He graduated from Stanley High School in 1942, where he served as Class President.

Don married Marlys J. Flaucher October 3, 1949 in Waterloo; she died September 24, 2010. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and participated in the Honor flight in June 2010.

Don was the Office Manager’s Assistant at Crystal Ice and Fuel for 20 years and then worked for Hawkeye Photo and American Professional Color. He worked for Chamberlain Manufacturing for 14 years retiring as Reproduction Specialist in 1989.

He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, and had been a member of the Resurrection Choir since its inception and was a song leader. He was Vice Chief Ranger of the Saint Mary Court Catholic Order of Foresters, a member of Knights of Columbus, a member of Waterloo Optimist Club and was Optimist of the Year in 1968, he was past treasurer of Waterloo Jaycees.

Survivors include his children and grandchildren: son Lawrence Verbeck of Evansdale and children: Ryan (Casey) Verbeck and Adam Verbeck; son Alan Verbeck of Waterloo; son Norman (Cindy) Verbeck of Waterloo and child Sarah Verbeck; daughter Lorraine (Mike) Rosteck of Janesville and children Michael Ray, Steven (Charity), Rachael Rosteck and Dan (Molly) Rosteck; daughter Donna (Jim) Simmons of West Des Moines and children Stephanie Beard, Brett Beard and Brandon Beard; son Leonard Verbeck of Waterloo; daughter Marlene (John) Rohde of Johnston and child Jeremiah (April) Wingett; and son Matthew (Lisa) Verbeck of Cedar Falls and children Zachary and Jacob. He is also survived by 16 great grandchildren and a sister, Julie (Jack) Spence Jones of Oelwein.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, a son Andrew Verbeck in 1987, a brother Edward Verbeck and sisters Evelyn Johnson and Florence Vanek.
