Biography--

Carrie Sand, 86, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Thursday, August 17, 2017 at ManorCare Health Services.

She was born January 14, 1931, in Waterloo, the daughter of Richard and Izell West Schults. She married Ralph Schmidt on July 25, 1951; he died November 14, 1953. She married Arthur Sand on November 5, 1960, in Waterloo; he died April 6, 1989.

Carrie graduated from La Porte City High School in 1949 and from the Marshalltown nursing program in 1955 with her RN certification. She was a registered nurse for 50 years, working at Schoitz Hospital and then Covenant Medical Center, retiring in 2005.

She was a member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church and volunteered at the surgical hostess desk at Covenant Medical Center.

Carrie is survived by her two daughters, Pat Griswold and Mary Sand, both of Waterloo; a son, David (Cindi) of Waterloo; a daughter in law, Jane Schmidt of Dallas; five grandchildren: Joseph (Heidi) Schmidt, Ryan Schmidt, Lora (Carlos) Mejia, Nick Sand, and Sarah Sand; eight great grandchildren: Jordan Marie Schmidt, Tyler Schmidt, Carlos "Cam" Mejia, Zachary Mejia, Stephanie Mejia, Chelsie Mejia, Rylynn Rachel Schmidt and Dalyn Edward Schmidt; two sisters, Ila (Robert) Cronin of Waterloo and Cora Parsons of Arkansas; and a sister in law, Joanne Rogers Schults of San Jose, California.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana Sand; a son, Roy Schmidt; a grandson, Chad Schmidt; and two brothers, Fred and Robert Schults.
