Obituary for Robert W. Hundley

Robert W. “Bob” Hundley, 73, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Yuma, AZ, died Sunday, July 30, 2017 of cancer.

He was born Mar 19, 1944 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Carl and Norma (Phelps) Hundley. He married Janice Holmes and they later divorced. He married Mary Hsiao-yin (Ho) and they had four children. She died in 1980. He married Dorothy (Allen-McHone) in 1982.

Bob graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1962 and entered the US Army. Following basic training he entered the Army Security Agency (ASA), a unit directed by the National Security Agency, where he held a Top Secret (Crypto) security clearance. In 1963, Bob was one of the first Americans sent to Viet Nam. By monitoring, locating, and following enemy radio transmissions, members of the ASA were credited with saving many thousands of American and South Vietnamese soldiers’ lives. Later on Bob became an ROTC instructor and a National Guard and Army Reserve advisor, retiring in 1982.

In addition to farming, Bob took over the Pioneer seed dealership from his father and he sold seed and Crop Insurance for many years, turning the seed dealership over to his daughter, Tyler, after 25 years.

Survived by: his mother, his wife, four children; Christina (Tom) Moore and Scott Hundley, both of West Des Moines, Tyler Hundley and Terry Hundley, both of Cedar Falls, and three step-children; Cyd McHone and Ali (Keith Makeyenko) McHone, both of Cedar Falls, and David (Lisa) McHone of Yuma, AZ, and a sister, Marlys Bartine; fifteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one due in December.

Preceded in death by: his father and a brother-in-law, Cyrus Bartine.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls with military honors conducted by the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 Honor Guard and the Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and also for one hour prior to the service Thursday.
