Obituary for Mr. and Mrs. Tate

Raymond Tate passed away peacefully at his home in Coral Springs, Florida on February 17th, 2016. Mary Ellen (nee Shaffer) Tate passed away surrounded by family at her home in Waterloo, Iowa on July 21st, 2017.

Raymond was born in Wapella, Illinois, on December 24th, 1922. Mary Ellen was born in Amboy, Illinois on June 4th, 1925. Both graduated from Clinton High School, Clinton, Illinois in 1943 and were married on June 27th, 1943, in Clinton, prior to Raymond leaving for the Army in World War II. In 2015 they celebrated 72 years of marriage.

After Raymond was discharged from the Army, they traveled with Shriver Gas Conversions converting homes to natural gas in mostly the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states. In 1959 Raymond purchased the Cadillac dealership in Waterloo (Tate Cadillac Olds Honda) and moved the family. After retiring in 1978 they spent their summers at Lake Kabetogama, Minnesota and winters in Coral Springs, Florida.

At the lake they enjoyed over 40 summers of fishing, berry picking, shore lunches, and boating. Living at the lake was what they enjoyed most with family and friends often visiting. It is there that they instilled the love of the outdoors and nature in their children and grandchildren.

They are survived by their children Ben (Joanne) of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Linda (Fran) Eighme of Waterloo, Iowa, Steve (Bill Peer) of Eureka, California, Abbe Little of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Nancy (Jerry) Sires of Dunkerton, Iowa, Jimmy, of Waterloo, Iowa, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be private.
