Biography--

Melvin J. Kies, 91, of Waterloo, died at home Wednesday, July 19, of natural causes.

He was born Dec. 2, 1925, in Jesup to William and Anna Wester Kies. He married Donna Willer on Jan. 20, 1951, in St. John's Catholic Church, Waterloo. She died Aug. 25, 2009.

He graduated from Jesup High School in 1943. Melvin was a mail carrier in Waterloo for 34 years retiring in 1985. He served in U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the Jesup American Legion. Melvin enjoyed his family, golfing, and friends at The Locker Room (“PODS”).

He is survived by his four daughters: Katie (Bruce) Wickham, Susan Kies and Jean Marie Southworth, all Waterloo, and Leslie Kies of Phoenix; five grandchildren, Nicholas (Julia) Nenow, Katie Lynn Southworth, Erica (Julio) Juarez, Ashley Pratt and Elliott Pratt; two stepgrandchildren, Wes (Cameron) Baskerville and Ashleigh Baskerville; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Polly) of Dewey, Ariz.; two sister, Rita Hummel of Jesup and Patricia Mangrich of La Porte City; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Sharon Kies; four brothers, Richard, Gerald, Robert and William; and two sisters, Bernadette Cook and Marcella Koshatka.
