Elberta LaVonne Swyers died on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 of natural causes at Bartel’s Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

She was born on October 4, 1930, in rural Traer, Iowa, to Elbert and E. Fay (Smiley) Wiseman. Elberta was raised in Waterloo by her mother and step-father, John Moss, Sr. She attended school in Waterloo graduating from West High with the Class of 1948. Elberta married Earl Swyers, Sr. on July 7, 1951 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. They were married for 56 years until his death in 2007.

She was a life-long member of Our Savior’s where she was taught Sunday School, served on many boards and committees, and worked as the church secretary for 14 years. Throughout her lifetime, Elberta also worked at Lederman’s Clothing in Evansdale, in the offices of Rath Packing, and at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids.

Elberta was preceded in death by her parents and her step-father; her husband; her grandson, Brett Swyers; a sister, Betty Lancaster; two brothers, Donald Wiseman and John Zahn; and two step-brothers, Howard and Sonny Peterson.

She is survived by her four children: Earl “Skip” (Joni) Swyers, Jr. of Readlyn, Ed (Elaine) Swyers of New Hampton, Elaine (Jerald) Steinbronn of Elk Run Heights, Jamie (Rod) Clancy of Waterloo; eight grandchildren: Amanda (Bill) Fowler of Clinton, Joe (April) Rundle of Readlyn, Cody (Rebecca) Swyers of Tripoli, Broc Swyers of Readlyn, Theresa (Jason) Burmahl of Marion, Holly Reeves of Fairbank, Kayla Clancy and Sarah Clancy of Gainsville, FL; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, John (Wanda) Moss, Sr. of Round Lake Park, IL, Eldon Wiseman and Doug Wiseman of Phoenix, AZ; a sister, Connie (Henry) Branhagen of Waterloo; and a step-sister, Susie (Bobby) Mack of Barling, AR.

Elberta loved her family deeply and prayed for them daily. She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, collecting tea pots and coloring. She was proud of her penmanship, which she learned from her grandfather. Above all else, she loved the Lord and clung tightly to her faith.

Memorials may be directed tour Savior’s Lutheran Church.
