Ida L. O'Leary

October 18, 1923 - June 27, 2017

Ida O’Leary, age 93, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at home while under the care of Cedar Valley Home Hospice.

She was born October 18, 1923 in LaMotte, Iowa, daughter of Mathias and Elizabeth Scholtes Wathier. She married Daniel C. O’Leary on October 15, 1949, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dubuque. Daniel preceded her in death on July 3, 2005.

Ida worked at Dubuque Battery, Marita’s Beauty Salon, Roshek’s, and the Walsh Store in Dubuque.

Ida was a loving mother of four children. She is survived by two sons, Dan and Tom (Sue) O’Leary, both of Waterloo; two daughters, Mary Murphy of Marion, Iowa and Elizabeth “Libby” O’Leary of Waterloo; five grandchildren: Sandra of Marion, Iowa, John (Sarah) Murphy of Ankeny, Iowa, Fr. Mark D. Murphy of The Holy Rosary Cluster (Elma, Iowa), Ryan (Jessica) O'Leary and Holly (DeAngelo) Newman, all of Waterloo; five great-grandchildren Madeleine, Emily and Max Murphy of Ankeny, Iowa and Montroy and Amiah Newman of Waterloo, and by many loving nieces and nephews.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Joseph, William, and Melvin Wathier; two sisters, Elizabeth Hays and Mary Petesch; and by a son-in-law, Mike Murphy.

Ida liked reading her bible, attending perpetual adoration, attending prayer groups (Inter-City Prayer Community and Marian Prayer Group). Ida enjoyed giving to charities, crossword puzzles, and eating out. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 30 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary service. Visitation will continue for an hour before services on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or Right to Life.
