Hilda Higdon

Hilda Selma Heath Higdon was born on October 7, 1917, in Black Earth, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Myrtle (Lee) Mickelson. Hilda resided in Black Earth, Wisconsin, Rockford, Illinois, and most recently Evansdale, Iowa for the past 58 years.

She worked for Heskon Hopkins, Oscar Meyer, 709 Lunch, Motel 6, Canteen Food Service and American Heritage where she retired in 1980 after 25 years. Hilda was a wonderful mother and grandmother who raised seven children all by herself. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and canning. She loved the Hawkeyes, Cowboys, and going out to eat.

Hilda always made cookies and pies for everyone. She was a kind-hearted woman who made sure all her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids were thought of on their birthdays. Hilda died at the age of 99 on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at ManorCare in Waterloo, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Linda Kohls; two brothers, Merrill and Herman Mickelson; and a sister, Ruby Mickelson.

Hilda is survived by four daughters: Patricia (Patrick) Heun, Joyce Heth, Brenda (Jerry) Lange, and Carol (Jerry Novotny) Schoonover; two sons, Bill (Cheryl) Heath and John (Amy) Higdon; 22 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
