Biography--

Ethel L. Valentine, 99, of Waterloo, Iowa, and formerly of Litchfield Park, Arizona, moving to Waterloo to be near her daughter in 2006, died Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Friendship Village.

Ethel Louise was born October 17, 1917 in East Rush, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Fred D. and Vivian M. (Terry) Kiefer. She married Donald C. Byers June 28, 1952; he died March 30, 1976. Ethel then married Warren B. Valentine on February 18, 1977; he died September 19, 2002. She was a cashier for Keefer's Grocery store in Mechanicsburg, PA until 1980.

Ethel had a card ministry of encouragement at Grace Fellowship Church and Friendship Village where she was a resident for 11 years. She really took on the meaning of “friendship” with her beautiful smile and little ways to show she cared for you. She put little surprises in her neighbors’ boxes outside their doors or treats wrapped up after her trip to the grocery store.

She love cooking and making her specials for family and friends. Some of her specialties were tapioca pudding, pumpkin roll with cream cheese filling and of course her wonderful peanut butter pie.

In addition she enjoyed knitting afghans for her family and others until she could no longer hold the knitting needles without pain. One of her favorite things to do was to play Wii bowling. She really looked forward to the two times a month she played. The Friday before she was promoted, she bowled three games and scored in the 130’s.

Since her declining health her favorite spot was in her chair by the window watching the squirrels and birds at the feeder. She always wanted to know what was happening with her family near and far and if you visited her you had to sign her guest book.

Ethel is survived by a daughter Vivian (Ron) Weimer of Waterloo, a stepdaughter Helen (Jack) Hoffman of Pittsburgh, PA, a stepson Warren (Jean) Valentine of Casa Grande, AZ, and a son-in-law John (Marcie) Veevaete of Mount Vernon, IN. She is also survived by grandchildren: Tom Stephens, Jim (Erin) Weimer, Jason (Doni) Weimer, and Amy (Scott) Blakesley; step-grandchildren: Tammy McLean, James and Jeffrey Thurston, and Stephanie and William Valentine; great-grandchildren: Claire, Levi, and Nora Stephens; Lauren, Treyton, and Eli Weimer; Asia, Coleman, and Everest Weimer; and Noah and Gabrielle Blakesley; step-great-grandchildren: Tyler and Brita Proctor and Max Thurston; and nieces and nephews: Geraldine Spencer, Jeannette Barton, Mary Ann Davies, Louise Noble, Raymond and Bob Carney, and Glenn and Freddie Kiefer.

Ethel is preceded in death by daughters Donna Veevaete, and Arlene Stephens, a grandson Andy Veevaete, a granddaughter LeeAnn Shomper, a sister Fayetta Spencer, and brothers Claude and Glen Kiefer.
