Obituary for Berwyn C. Wood

Berwyn C. Wood, 92, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Monday, June 5, 2017, at the Western Home.

He was born December 10, 1924 in Waterloo, son of Willard A. and Hazel A. Heatherton Wood. He married Ramona M. Connell on September 7, 1946 in Waterloo. She died January 1, 1991.

Berwyn served in the Navy during World War II and then in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He later was a locomotive engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad for thirty-four years, retiring in 1981.

He is survived by a son, Chip (Ann) Wood of Waterloo; three daughters, Penelope “Penny” (John) Spaulding of Newport, Minnesota, Pamela Gonzales of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Peggy (Jeff) Orvis of Cedar Falls; twelve grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Heyer; a son, Sean Wood, in infancy; a son-in-law, Thomas Gonzales.

Services will be Thursday, June 8, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway with inurnment in Garden of Memories Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by Waterloo and Evansdale Amvets and U.S. Navy Funeral Honors. Public visitation will be for one hour before services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Berwyn’s interests and hobbies after retirement were biking, golfing and volunteering at Cedar Valley Hospice for many years. His faith and his church, Queen of Peace, were a very important part of his entire life.
