Mary Ellen Werkmeister was born on November 23, 1937, in Freeport, Illinois, the daughter of Frederick and Florence (Folgate) Getty. Mary graduated high school from East High in Waterloo.

On April 1, 1955, she was united in marriage to Robert Wayne Werkmeister. Mary worked as a supervisor for 28 years with the State of Iowa Unemployment Office, now known as Iowa Workforce Development. She was very proud of her sons and enjoyed seeing them become successful. She also collected cobalt dishes and other antiques.

Mary died at the age of 78 on Sunday, June 26, 2016, at Unity Point Allen Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Duane and Gerald Getty. Mary is survived by three sons, Wayne (Tammy) Werkmeister of Columbia, Missouri, Scot (Lori) Werkmeister of Lake Wylie South Carolina, and Dan (Lois) Werkmeister of Waterloo; a granddaughter, Loralyn Werkmeister of West Des Moines; a brother, Harold Getty of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Please direct memorials to Cedar Valley Hospice or Concordia Lutheran Church.
