Charles Henry Hammett, Jr. was born in Beloit, Kansas, on November 17, 1930, son of Charles and Mable (Guhde) Hammett, Sr. He attended Kansas Schools and served in the United States Army from 1952-1956 during the Korean War.

Charley was married to Ruth Herring in 1954 and the couple had five children. The couple later divorced. Charley worked for Cedar Falls Utilities for 18 years and at the John Deere Engine Works for 18 years. He loved his fish pond, golfing, gardening, playing cards, telling jokes and the Chicago Cubs.

Charley passed away on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Unity Point Health – Allen Memorial Hospital at the age of 85 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Marvin Hammett; two brothers, Dwight and Roy; and two sisters, Frances and Maxine.

Charley is survived by two sons, Charles Hammett III of Springfield, MO and Thomas (Esther) Hammett of Shawnee, OK; two daughters, Charlene (Jeffery) Smith of Hazel Green, WI, and Kathlene Hammett of Eagan, MN; his longtime companion, Evelyn Barnhart; four sisters: Darlene Neese, Naomi Jarred, Wanda Boswell, and Barbara Taylor; 10 grandchildren; and by 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
