Esther Case, 89, a lifelong resident of the Cedar Falls, Waterloo/La Porte City area, died on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at the Landing. A memorial visitation from 10:30 – 11:30 am, followed by a time of remembrance at 11:30 am, Monday, April 24, 2017 at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories of Waterloo, Iowa.

Esther was born January 13, 1928, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the oldest of four children of John and Christa Langskov. With unwavering companionship and loyalty, she cared for her parents and sister, Greta, at the end of their lives.

After her freshman year at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, this exceptional woman became an assistant to the vice president of Galloway Manufacturing. She married Robert (Bob) Case in June of 1948, which led her from the business world to life on the farm in La Porte City.

Opposites attract. Esther was not a daredevil, but she married one. She didn’t want to jump from a 20-foot cliff into a rock-quarry pond, but she did. She didn’t like snow skiing, but she tried. She didn’t love flying in Bob’s airplanes, but she frequently was his co-pilot. After Bob left farming, he formed Case Real Estate and Development Co., with Esther by his side. She was nervous about taking the real estate license test, but she studied hard, and of course, she passed.

Active in various community projects, Esther was most proud of her involvement with the La Porte City FFA Museum. She was a volunteer for her children’s activities and enjoyed playing bridge. A lover of antiques, she belonged to Quester’s. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Esther enjoyed robust health for most of her life. She took great pride in her flower garden and kept an immaculate house and garage. She adored her exercise, yoga and water aerobics classes. When she was 85 years old, she bragged she could still float on her back and stick her leg straight up in the air! She had the flexibility and energy of people half her age.

Esther lives on in the hearts and memories of her husband of 68 years, Bob, as well as her daughter, Kathy (Steve Zumbach) of West Des Moines, Iowa, and her grandchildren, Matthew Zumbach of Chicago, IL, and Stephanie (Justin Hu) of Edina, MN. Great granddaughters, Kylee and Kenzie Hu, loved their “Gigi.” Esther is also survived by her sister, Donna Powers of Minneapolis, MN, and a brother John Langskov of Lincoln, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Greta Caulk, and her son, Michael A. Case.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Valley Hospice.
