Janet Ruth McFadzen was born at her parent’s home at Plover, Iowa, on March 3, 1933, a twin to her brother, James Charles. Their parents were Charles G. and Sarah Ruth (Crook) McFadzen. Janet and James started school in a little red, one-room schoolhouse in rural Cylinder, Iowa. In 1941 they moved back to Plover, Iowa, and graduated from the Plover Consolidated School.

On May 11, 1952, she married Gerald “Jerry” Fain in the Presbyterian Church in Plover, Iowa. Janet’s great-grandfather had established this church and her father and grandfather were ordained elders at the time of their marriage. Their firstborn son, Steven, was later baptized in the same church. To this union, five boys were born: Steven, Scott, Daniel, Michael Charles (deceased) and Michael Paul Fain. In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Janet spent many years as a bookkeeper, earned a technician degree in nursing and worked as an insurance analyst. As the boys grew older, she filled the empty nest with antique dolls, tripping to antique stores and flea markets. She also enjoyed crocheting, scrapbooking and dedicated many hours to her computer.

Janet and Jerry moved to Waterloo in 2000 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Since then, they have enjoyed their winters in Florida and their summers in Waterloo, Iowa.

Janet passed away at home on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the age of 84 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael Charles Fain; her sister, Marilyn L. McFadzen Kinney, and her twin brother, James McFadzen.

Janet is survived by her husband of 65 years; four sons: Steven Fain of Waterloo, Scott (Christine) Fain of Lake in the Hills, IL, Daniel (Cynthia) Fain of Chatham, IL, and Michael (Kathryn) Fain of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren: Allison (Brandon) McBride, Jennifer (Eric) Krieger, Benjamin Fain, Aled Fain, Lucas Fain, Elise Fain, Olivia Fain, Isabella Fain, Sophia Fain, and Bianca Laurel Fain; and three great-grandchildren: Jack, Kate, and George Krieger.

Memorials may be directed to Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel.
