Biography--

Hazel May (Zipsie) Fulcher was born in Utica Township, near Lawler, Iowa, on March 4, 1917, daughter of Arthur V. and Mable E. (Cutsforth) Zipsie.

She was the oldest of five children, her brother Harold died at the age of 12. A younger sister, Arlene, died at age six, and shortly thereafter Hazel’s mother died at age 38. It was necessary for her to leave school at 8th grade to raise her two young sisters and to help with the farm.

Hazel married Everett C. Fulcher on July 16, 1938. They had three children, Donna, Norma, and Roger. Hazel had six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and one great, great-grandson who was born in July of 2016. Everett passed away on January 23, 1989.

For many years Hazel was an amazing seamstress, crafting everything from ornate wedding dresses, children’s clothing, the UNI Panther mascot uniform, to clergy robes, etc. She said her biggest challenge was sewing a policeman’s uniform. Her hobbies included cross-stitch, crochet and other needlework, flower gardening, and birdwatching. And she enjoyed time spent with the whole family at their cabin in Clear Lake, IA.

She lived at Willowwood, in an independent living apartment, for 21+ years. She treasured her many Willowwood friends and neighbors. She knew that several neighbors would be checking on her if she was ill when family couldn’t be there. She only moved to assisted living at Bickford Cottage in January of 2016. She flourished during her time there, always appreciating her loving caregivers and enjoying her new friends.

Hazel’s philosophy of life was to “laugh a lot and enjoy every minute.” She loved the Lord and was looking forward to reuniting with Everett in heaven.
