Visitation:
Wednesday, October 19 at La Porte City Funeral Home, 606 E. Main Street and an hour prior to the service on Thursday at the Church

West View Cemetery with military honors by USS San Diego American Legion Post of La Porte City, the Marine Corps League and the Marine Corps Honors Detail

Memorials:
directed to the family or a military charity of the donor’s choice.

Biography--

Captain Lee D. Foss, age 87, of La Porte City, died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at UnityPoint-Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

He was born June 26, 1929 in Spring Creek Township, rural La Porte City, Iowa, the son of Ralph Aiden and Letha (Ashley) Foss. Lee graduated from La Porte City High School with the Class of 1947. He was united in marriage with Joanne Marie Thompson on March 7, 1954 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in La Porte city. She preceded him in death on September 12, 2001.

Lee retired as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps in 1967 after 20 years of service, serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He also owned and operated Thompsons Jack and Jill grocery store in La Porte City. Lee was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, USS San Diego American Legion Post, both of La Porte City; a life member of the Cedar Valley Detachment of the Marine Corps League, League Mustang Association, 40/8 Fun and Honor Society of Legionaires, a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 50 plus year member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his three children: Susan Selk of Shullsburg, WI; David T. (Kim) Foss of La Porte City and Melissa (Jerald) Sauer of La Porte City; eight grandchildren: Abigail M. (Jesse) Hoppe of Dysart, Allison L. Foss of La Porte City, Emily Sauer of Oelwein, IA, Elizabeth Sauer and Erin Sauer, both of La Porte City, Elizabeth Ortiz of Dysart, Kristen Whitson of Hampton, IA and Richard Whitson of San Bernardino, CA; ten great-grandchildren: Bradley, Jacob, Carlie, Erica, Anthony, Raymond Jr., Nicholas, Breanna, Aydyn and Maxon; and a sister, Barbara Reinhardt of Chesapeake Bay, VA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son-in-law, Duane Selk; four brothers: Aiden “Bud” Ashley, Allen Foss, David & James in infancy; and a sister, Betty Cooper.
