Wilbert "Lefty" H. Sass, age 93, of Waterloo, Iowa, and formerly of Washburn, died of natural causes on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Country View Care Facility.

He was born on May 29, 1923, in Dewar, Iowa; the son of William F. & Laura (Koepke) Sass. Wilbert married Dorothy Mae Iverson, May 19, 1946 at Trinity American Lutheran Church in Waterloo; she preceded him in death on January 16, 2010.

He worked for Fuel Oil Service Gas & Heating Company for 35 years, and later worked in maintenance at Allen Memorial Hospital for 8 years.

Wilbert served in the U.S. Marines during World War II, from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Washburn. Wilbert was a hardworking man who enjoyed hunting and shooting.

Wilbert is survived by a son, Stewart Sass of Dubuque; a foster son, Jim (Judi) Rhodenbaugh of Waterloo; a grandson Dennis (Rachell) Lugg of Shell Rock; four great-grandchildren, Kaleb Bengston, Jonathon, Isabell, and Brody Lugg; and two sisters, Berdine Cole and Mary Sankey

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Diane Mangrich; three brothers, Don, William, and LaVerne Sass; four sisters, Louella Brown, Laurine Schrock, Arlene Dobbins, and Jeane Cunningham.
