Orlyn W. Wathier

November 29, 1932 - July 15, 2016

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - Orlyn W. Wathier, 83, of Friendship Village in Waterloo, died Friday, July 15, 2016 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa.

He was born November 29, 1932, in La Motte, Iowa, the son of Waldo L. and Martha R. Pitz Wathier. He married Dorothy Marie Mitchell August 28, 1954, in Key West, Iowa. She died August 23, 2013.
Orlyn graduated from Holy Rosary High School in La Motte and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Loras College in 1957 and his Master of Social Work degree from the University of Iowa in 1959. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a social worker/counselor for Catholic Charities for over 50 years.

He is survived by three sons: Fr. Douglas of Dubuque, Dean of Aurora, CO, and Dominic (Kathy) of Mabel, MN; three daughters: Marty of Omaha, Michelle (Rob) Hood of Glen Burnie, MD, and Mary (Jeff) Waters of Boise, ID; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Nick (Mary) of Arvada, CO; and two sisters, Shirley Small of Maquoketa and Velma Kilburg of Bellevue.

He was preceded by a son, Daryl and a brother, Roger.

Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at St Patrick Catholic Church, with inurnment in the Key West Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Richardson Funeral Service in Cedar Falls, where there will be a 7 p.m. Vigil Service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association East Central Iowa Chapter 317 7th Ave. SE #402, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401.
