Biography--

Melvin A. "Mel" Stabenow, 81, of Cedar Falls, died at NorthCrest Specialty Care, on Sunday, July 24, 2016.

Mel was born on April 25, 1935 in New Auburn, Wisconsin, the son of Arnold and Della Welke Stabenow.

He graduated from high school in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in 1953.

Mel married Yvonne Carpenter July 26, 1958 in Cedar Falls. She died June 29, 2013. He married Verla Waugh December 5, 2015 in Cedar Falls.

He worked at Deere and Co. for 30 years retiring in 1985 as Tool and Gage Designer. He owned and operated Mel's Design from 1985 1999. Mel was then a tour guide for John Deere from 2000-2009. He served 42 years in the National Guard and Army Reserve, retiring in 1995.

Mel was a member of Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church where he had been president of the Men's Club, an usher and greeter. He was past president of the Reserved Officers Association. local chapter and a member of Toastmasters.

Survived by his wife, Verla Waugh of Cedar Falls; two sons, Donald (Sue) Stabenow of Eldridge and Jack (Melissa) Stabenow of Waterloo; six grandchildren: Max, Ryan, and Jessica, Owen (DiAndra Strelow), John (Amanda Soda), and Kurt Stabenow; two step-grandchildren, Adam (Nicole Glover) and Corey Lemaitre; a brother, Dale (Joan) Stabenow of Waterloo; four step-children: Mark (Catherine) Waugh of Emmitsburg, Gloria (David) Nutt of Shawnee, KS, Joy (Tom) Brooks of Dyersville, and Julie (Kevin) Briden of Waterloo; and several more step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Yvonne Stabenow; a daughter, Kimberly J. Albers in 1982; a brother, James Stabenow; and a sister, Lucille Stabenow.

He had attended every Iowa Bowl game from 1983-2015 and had traveled extensively with Yvonne. He loved watching all Iowa Hawkeye sports, the Packers, the Boston Celtics, and enjoyed all card games.
