Biography--

John E. "Jack" Geist, 87, of Waterloo died at his home on Friday, September 23, 2016 of natural causes. He was born on February 11, 1929 in Waterloo, the son of George E. and Kathryn Hayes Geist.

He married Shirley McElroy on May 21, 1950 at Waterloo First Methodist Church.

Jack graduated from East High School in 1947 and then graduated from ISTC College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls in 1951 while working part-time at Rath Packing Company.

He worked briefly at James Black Dry Goods Company and then Unger Auto Supply until he found his calling as an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance, followed by his own insurance agency along with his brother Rod and Bob Brown (Geist-Brown-Geist) for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Grace Reformed Church, Waterloo, serving as Treasurer, on Consistory, sang in the choir, and planned and helped with its interior decoration. Jack was a Division Leader at the United Way, 30-year Treasurer for Black Hawk Humane Society. He served on the board for Habitat for Humanity and the Community Playhouse.

Jack is survived by his wife, Shirley; a son, Greg (Lyn) Geist of Tucson, Arizona; three grandsons: Matthew (Jennifer) Ganahl, Ryan Ganahl, and Jack G. Geist; two great-grandsons, Jackson and Alex Ganahl; sister-in-law Norma Kurtz; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded by his daughter, Laurie and brothers, Bob and Rod.
