A family committal service was held on Saturday October 8, 2016 at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Biography--

Russell E. Lauterbach, 92, of 1117 Maxhelen Blvd., Waterloo, Iowa died on Wednesday October 5, 2016 at Covenant Medical Center.

Russ was born May 17, 1924 in Reinbeck, Iowa. He graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1941 and married Donna M. Boren of Grundy Center on May 26, 1944. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before Donna died February 20, 2005.

Russ enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He served in the China offensive in the Asiatic theater during World War II and left the service as a Sergeant in March, 1946.

Russ began his banking career at the Lincoln Savings Bank, Reinbeck, Iowa, in June 1941. After the war, he joined the People’s Bank in Waterloo. He attended the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, receiving an Executive MBA. He progressed from Bookkeeping to President and Chairman of the Board before he retired in 1991.

Russ was a member of the First Congregational Church of Waterloo from 1950, and was also extensively involved in community service work.

He was a volunteer and board member of the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross for 45 years. He was local chairman and served two terms on the National Red Cross Board. He was a member for more than 50 years of both the Waterloo Kiwanis Club and American Legion Post # 138. He was a longtime member of the Independent Bankers Association, was Waterloo School Board Treasurer for many years, and 1956 Black Hawk County Polio Chairman. Russ also served on boards for the Boy Scouts and the United Way.

Russ and Donna loved their family most of all. They never missed a piano or dance recital or school program. He and Donna hosted extended family gatherings for years. They traveled extensively and often included family travel companions and visits to loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his wife Donna; his parents, Edward and Esther (Meewes) Lauterbach; and four brothers, Kenneth, Cecil, Jim, and Leon.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen (John A.) Williams, Macon, Georgia; a son, Gordon (Beth) Lauterbach, Waterloo; four granddaughters, Anissa (Will) Jordan, Macon, Georgia, Emily (David) Williams Jordan, Atlanta, Georgia; Sarah Lauterbach (Colin Clausen), Belvidere, Illinois; Erinn Lauterbach, Riverside, California; great grandsons Evan and Alexander Jordan; and a brother, Gary (Rosie) Lauterbach, Fort Dodge,
Iowa.
