Biography

Donald Charles Mosher was born on December 18, 1927 on the family farm near Aurora, Iowa. He was the son of Charles and Eva Leta Bradley Mosher. He graduated from the Aurora High School in 1945. Don served in the United States Army, where he trained as a tank driver. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1947. Upon returning to Iowa Don worked for Rath Packing Company in Waterloo.

Don married the love of his life, Ann Meyer, on June 4, 1950. Shortly after their marriage Don became a crop and livestock farmer. For 40 years the couple owned farms by Aurora, Maynard and Sumner. On these farms he taught his children the value of hard work, whether it was picking up rocks, baling hay or daily farm chores. Don was the first farmer in Bremer County to put pits under his hog building.

Don loved life and his family. As a young father he took his children, nieces and nephews hiking up the creek near the farm by Maynard. Throughout life he enjoyed fishing, whether at Sweet Marsh or on a lake in Minnesota. Yearly he attended the Girls’ State Basketball Tournaments, the Iowa State Fair and the Cattle Congress where he always ate at the Noodle Nook. Don loved to make people laugh and smile by frequently singing songs and coming up with his own silly sayings. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The couple retired to Waterloo in 1990. Don began scrapbooking his family history, piecing together puzzles and building a train set to keep busy. They moved to Windhaven Assisted Living Center in Cedar Falls in June of 2011. Together they celebrated 61 years before the Lord called Ann home in October of 2011. Upon her death Donald moved to Thalman Square, the memory unit of Western Home Communities.

Don accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. As a result, his faith and family were the two most important things in his life. While a member of the First Baptist Church of Sumner, Donald served as deacon, trustee and usher. Upon moving to Waterloo, Don became a member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church. There he was a part of the Golden Circle Sunday School class and found great pleasure in listening to children recite Bible verses during Awana Club. Don donated his time mowing the church grounds for 22+ years. His faith enabled him to face life’s joys and trials knowing that all things work together for good to them that love God.

In September of 2015 Don moved to Hillcrest Home in Sumner. He became ill on March 2, 2017 and died of natural causes one week later on Friday, March 10 surrounded by family and friends.

He is survived by two sons, Steven H. (Velma) of Sumner and Larry C. (Vonda) of Bondurant; a daughter, Nancy E. (James) Lalk of Sumner; seven grandchildren: Brian Mosher of Dallas, Texas, Angela (Blaine) Ferguson of Edmonton, AB, Canada, Bradley Lalk of Waverly, Carrie Lalk of Waterloo, Christopher Mosher of Ankeny, and Joshua and Isaac Mosher of Bondurant; five great-grandchildren: Lillian, Lydia and Lance Ferguson and Lucas and Tate Lalk; and a sister-in-law, Iola Mosher of Nokomis, Florida.

He is preceded in death by his wife; a granddaughter, Terry Lynn Mosher; and a brother, Howard Mosher.
