Jean Marie Schmidt (1938-2016)

Jean Marie Schmidt of rural Waterloo, died at home January 3. 2016.

She was born June 5, 1938, in Waterloo, daughter of John F. and Opal Lowe Schmidt.

Jean was a member of the Bennington Boosters 4-H Club and a life-time member of Mt. Hope United Methodist Church.

Jean attended a one room Bennington Township country school through eighth grade and graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1955. She attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, earning degrees in Bacteriology, B.A. 1959, M.S. 1961, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology, University of California, Berkeley, 1965.

Jean was a professor of microbiology at Arizona State University in Mesa from 1966-2005, holding many faculty positions and an active Cancer researcher.

Positions: NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, 1965-66; Assistant Professor of Microbiology, Dept. of Botany and Microbiology, Arizona State University, 1971-79; Professor of Microbiology, Arizona State University, 1979-2005. Acting Chair, Dept. of Microbiology, AZ State University, 1988-89; Associate Chair, Dept. of Microbiology, 1991. Associate Director for Cancer Biology, Cancer Research Institute, AZ State University,
1984 to 2005.

Honors: Sigma Xi,1967; Phi Beta Kappa, 1959; Iota Sigma Pi, 1961; NIH Postdoc. Fellowship, 1965-66; NIH Predoc. Fellowships, 1959-61 and 1964-65; Graduation with Distinction, 1959.

Member: American Society for Microbiology, 1960-2015; Society for General Microbiology, 1968-2015; American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1962-2015, Fellow.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by an uncle, Donald Lowe of Waterloo, and numerous first cousins including JoAnn (Jerry) Kramer of Cedar Falls.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 27, at St. Johnʼs Bennington Lutheran Church, 4110 E. Mt. Vernon Rd., rural Waterloo. A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. A private inurnment will be held later at the Old German Burial Grounds of Bennington Township.

Memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa Foundation, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, Iowa, 52244-4550 to support the Schmidt Family Cancer Research Fund. On the memo line please note in memory of Jean Schmidt.
