Obituary for Janice "Jan" M. Dusenberry

Janice (Jan) Marie Dusenberry died May 17, 2016, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she spent the last four years of her life. She was 92 years old.

Born December 26, 1923 on a farm near Shenandoah, Iowa, she moved to Des Moines at the age of 17 to attend AIB. She then worked for St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance for nearly nine years. After her husband’s death, she was a secretary for the Iowa State Legislature and then for the Des Moines Public Schools, retiring in 1984.

She is survived by her three children, Judith (Dan) Brady of Onalaska, WI; Thomas (Debbie) Dusenberry of Salem, MA; and Gary (Mary) Dusenberry of Waterloo, IA; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Fran Tyner, of Shenandoah, IA, and six nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 20 years, Harry Robert Dusenberry, who died in 1969, and by her brother, Bill Tyner; her sister, Betty Andre; brothers-in-law, Richard Andre and John Dusenberry; and sister-in-law, Adeline Dusenberry.

Jan was a member of First United Methodist Church for over 70 years and was active in the Pair-O-Troopers Sunday school class as well as other activities in the church. She volunteered for Blank Hospital Guild and Methodist Hospital, accumulating over 2,000 hours. She was a member of Le Cercle d’Amies for 70 years, PEO Chapter GX for ten years, the Des Moines School Secretaries and the Retired School Secretaries and many bridge clubs. She was a Girl Scout leader for seven years while living in Council Bluffs IA.

She loved to play golf and was a member of Waveland, Grandview and Woodland Hills golf leagues. She carded four hole-in-ones, two in the same year, and the last one at the age of 82.

Traveling was also a passion. As a member of Friendship Force, she traveled to Germany, Taiwan and New Zealand. She toured Ireland with her sister to meet their relatives there. She also traveled to many cities in the United States attending Elder Hostel programs with her friends.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the family to be given to her favorite organizations.
