Deacon Leo J. Brustkern, 85, of LaPorte City, formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, May 4 at LaPorte City Specialty Care.

He was born June 23, 1930 in Waterloo, son of Peter and Elizabeth Klein Brustkern. He married Wilma Weiden of November 22, 1949, in Gilbertville.

Leo graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1948. He worked at Rath Meat Packing Co. for thirty-five years, until they closed. He was ordained a deacon in the Catholic Church on March 21, 1982 and served as a deacon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. He worked as Ministry Co-ordinator for St. Patrick’s Parish in Dubuque for six years and two years as Pastoral Administrator. He retired in 1997 and moved to LaPorte City.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Clair of Hamilton, Ohio, Andrew (Jean) of Spokane, Wash. and Daniel of Austin, Texas; eight daughters, Deborah (Paul) Weber of Dunkerton, Rose (Dan) DaBillo of LaPorte City, Valerie Roby of Arvada, Colo., Barbara (Pat) Mahr of Circle Pines, Minn., Mary (Kurt) Hanson of Missoula, Mont., Joan Erickson of Maple Grove, Minn., Amy (Tony) Paulhus of LaPorte City and Joyce (Paul) Dornbier of Omaha, Neb.; twenty-five grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Peter (Theresa) of Jesup and Garald of LaPorte City.

Preceded by two brothers, Melvin and Alvin; three sisters, Marie Thiry, Marjorie Schwickerath and Marguerite Wilharm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Public visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Memorials may be made to the family at 103 Anton Dr., La Porte City, Iowa 50651.
