Funeral services for Richard G. O'Brian, 79, longtime Hudson resident and businessman were held Monday morning, 10:30 a.m. at the Community Church of Hudson. Services were conducted by Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, with Rev. Allen Ricks in charge. Burial was in the Hudson Cemetery with military rites conducted by Hudson Amvets Post 82.

Mr. O'Brian died at Allen Memorial Hospital on Thursday, July 29, 1999 of cancer.

Richard (Dick) O'Brian was born January 2, 1920 in Buchanan County, the son of George and Ruth Blad O'Brian. He was united in marriage with Gertrude A. Van Tasell on April 20, 1946 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Dick farmed for 15 years and then worked for Universal Industries in Hudson. He owned and operated O'Brian's Mobile Service Station in Hudson for 17 years and retired in 1984.

He served in the US Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations.

Dick is survived by his wife, Gertrude of 229 Main Street; two sons, Russell of Hudson and Dean of Topeka, Kansas; a daughter, Donna Braatz of Waterloo; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eighteen step great-grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren; four sisters: Helen Bass of Des Moines, Iowa, June Holstien of St. Maries, Idaho, Eleanor Van Tasell of Rowley, Iowa, and Eunice Hamilton of Independence, Iowa; also two step brothers, Darly Johnson and Lloyd Johnson, both of Independence, Iowa; and a step-sister, Joan Tonn of Dubuque, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Glen O'Brian of Coralville; his stepmother, Alice Johnson O'Brian; and a step brother, Marvin Johnson.
