Biography--

Elsie Elizabeth Kearney Ehlert, 85, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Monday, December 21, 2015, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.

Elsie was born April 15,1930 at Oakland, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Mona (Bates) Kearney.

Elsie was the last of seven children and only daughter. Elsie and her brothers grew up on the family farm at Oakland, Iowa. She married Harlan H. Ehlert June 21, 1953 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.

After graduating from Oakland High School in 1947, she attended college at the University of Iowa for two years and then transferred to Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), graduating in 1951 with a four year B.A. degree in Lower Elementary. Elsie taught school in Des Moines and Waterloo. Later in life she attended Hawkeye Community College graduating in 1975 with an Applied Arts Degree. She retired from teaching to become a homemaker after the birth of her daughter, Nora Ehlert and later a son, Brian Ehlert. Elsie enjoyed her art work and was a collector of many glass antiques.

Survivors include her husband, Harlan Ehlert, of Cedar Falls; one son-in-law, Paul Johnston, of Cedar Falls; two grandsons, Todd (Nicole) Johnston of Scotia, New York and Stephen Johnston of Portland, Maine; two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Caitlyn Johnston, of Scotia, and two brothers, Mervin Kearney of Oakland, Iowa and Blaine Kearney of Audubon, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her son, Brian Ehlert (2007); her daughter, Nora Johnston (2015); her parents, Frank and Mona Kearney; four brothers: Paul, Earl, Loren, and Roy Kearney, and three sisters-in-law: Darlene, Jackie, and Mary Lou.

Services will be Monday, December 28, 2015, at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be Sunday, December 27, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and an hour before service at the church on Monday.
