Obituary for John H. Hayes

Hayes, John Henry of Waterloo, Iowa rejoined God in heaven on December 12, 2015 with his loving wife, Dayle Hayes by his side. John fought cancer with unparalleled grace and dignity.

He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army for 20 years during which time he received numerous awards including bronze and silver stars. He retired from the military and then served the U.S. Postal Service for 20 additional years.

As a result of his world travel, John maintained a deep respect for diverse cultures. He was an outdoorsman at heart who loved to fish, boat and take long walks with his loyal pal Max. He enjoyed his bowling league and the friendships it provided. He was an avid reader with a great appreciation for jazz. John captivated all who knew him and will be remembered for his infectious smile and sense of humor.

Survived by his wife; sons, Timothy Hayes and Shaun Hayes; grandsons, Anthony Hayes, Terrell Hayes and Taylen Hayes; and granddaughter Abigail Avis. Stepchildren, Mia Cheeseman and Tanner (Megan) Cheeseman with grandchildren Emmy and Molly Cheeseman. Sisters, Betty Chambers and Jeanette Ambrose along with many nieces and nephews.

The burial service will be for immediate family with a military ceremony held on December 18, 2015. Richardson Funeral Service is assisting the family.
