Ralph W. Ahlhelm

March 1, 1922 - December 10, 2015

Ralph W. Ahlhelm, 93, of Evansdale, died Thursday, December 10, at Unity Point Allen Hospital.

He was born March 1, 1922, in Waterloo, the son of William and Barbara Weis Ahlhelm. He married Naomi Tucker and they later divorced. He married Mae Ann Peterson on June 11, 1952, in Omaha, Neb, and she died March 7, 2012.

Ralph served in the United States Navy during World War II and was employed with the Waterloo Fire Department for 26 years, retiring in 1972. He also owned R & M Auto Sales.

Survivors include five sons: Dennis (Karen) of Evansdale, Michael (Sharon) of Linn Creek, MO, Tim (Marilyn) of Evansdale, Ronald Peterson of Cedar Falls, and Richard (Beth) of Evansdale; two daughters, Jane (John) Katalinich and Penny St. John both of Waterloo; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Melba “Tommie”) of Des Moines and James (Janice) of Evansdale; a sister, Elaine Berry of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Barbara Ahlhelm of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by a brother, Donald; two sisters, Irene Peterson and Madeline Schellhorn.

Services: Tuesday, December 15, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets Post 31 assisted by the United States Naval Honor Guard. Public visitation from 4-8 P.M. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 4:00 P.M. Legion of Mary rosary and 7:00 P.M. vigil service. Visitation also one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Community Meals Program at Queen of Peace Church.
