Biography--

John J. Lutgen, 87, of Waterloo, died Sunday, November 29, at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, where he had been a resident for the past two and a half years.

John was born December 7, 1927 in Waterloo, son of Joseph H. and Ruth F. Lutgen. He attended Sacred Heart grade school and graduated from West High School in 1946, where he played varsity basketball.

John graduated from the University of Iowa in 1950, where he majored in business. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

John entered the U.S. Army, January 6, 1951. He saw front-line action in Korea for six months. Cpl. John J. Lutgen was in the 15th medical battalion, First Cavalry division and later was transferred to Camp Chitose Hokkaido in northern Japan until July 1952. Upon release, he joined his father at Stewart-Simmons Printing Company. When the company was sold he moved to Ft. Dodge and was manager of the Messenger Printing Company. He retired from there and located in western Colorado and finally in New Mexico.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim Lutgen.

Survivors include his sister, Mary (Bob) Lichty of Waterloo; five nieces: Martha (David) Bloom, Bobbe Carney, Amy (Phillip Walker) Lichty, Marggie (Michael) LeBlanc and Katie Watson; a nephew, John (Michelle) Lichty and cousins, Joan Munday and Mary Anne Ford.

Services will be Thursday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale Amvets Post 31, Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation for an hour before services at the church on Thursday. Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to St. Edward’s Catholic Church or the Grout Museum.

Thursday December 3, 2015, at St. Edward Catholic Church
