Richard Ray Van Besien

April 27, 1941 - November 16, 2015

Biography--

Richard Ray "Dick" Van Besien, 74, died Monday, November 16 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born April 27, 1941 in Waterloo, son of Robert George and Margaret Agnes Truax Van Besien. He married Sandra Lea Howe on June 10, 1961 in Waterloo. She died December 14, 2011. He then married Kathleen Marie (Coughlin) Dunakey on August 24, 2012 in Waterloo.

Dick was a supervisor at John Deere Tractor Mfg. Co. for thirty-two years, retiring 4/27/1993. He enjoyed family time, golfing, playing cards and gardening. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for over 50 years and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church before that. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, participating in the Tootsie Roll Drive.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Kelly (Gene) Hansen of Waterloo, Sara Jordan of Cedar Rapids and Bridgette (Jeff) Miller of LaPorte City; a son, Mark (Deanna) Van Besien of Waterloo; twelve grandchildren, Blake (Amanda) Hansen, Holly (Brian) McComb, Bryar Hansen, Jacob Van Besien, Joshua Van Besien, Brittany (Bill) Mashek, Trevor, Vincent and Hope Howard, Alexander and Mackenzie Jordan and Maddy Miller; six great-grandchildren, Liam, Camdyn and Emme Hansen, Brayden, and Jaxon McComb and Jaden Howard; five sisters, Mary Kay Mintline of Calif., Carol Powell of Prairie Du Chien, Wis., Jane (Gene) Zeck of Washington, Jean Lynch of West Des Moines and Joan Hoveland of Cedar Falls; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sandy; a daughter, Amy Howard; two sisters, Dorothy and Virginia and a brother Jon in infancy.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also for an hour preceding services at the church on Friday.
