Biography--

Melvina S. "Mel" Nolan, 82, of Evansdale, Iowa, and formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, died at UnityPoint Health Hospice on Saturday, April 11, 2015 of natural causes.

Mel was born on February 18, 1933, in Waterloo, the daughter of Earl and Olive Stripes Appleby.

She attended Sloan Wallace School in Waterloo.

Mel married Ernest Virgil Nolan, Sr., on September 5, 1949 in Waterloo. He died February 4, 2008. She worked as a waitress at Starr Bowling Lanes for 12 years, retiring in 1986. She was member of V.F.W. Post 31 Auxiliary in Evansdale.

Mel loved spending time with her family. She always enjoyed watching sports. Mel was known for her love of Diet Pepsi, Pop Tarts, Rice Krispie Treats, and Milky Way bars.

She loved to go camping with Ernest, bowling, garage sales and to play BINGO. One of her fondest memories was a trip to the Wisconsin Dells with the whole family. Mel had a special place in her heart for her favorite dog, Boomer, who was a Bichon Frise.

She is survived by three sons, Ernest (Andie) V. Nolan, Jr. of Waterloo, Rick (Deb) Nolan of Evansdale, and Bill Nolan of Montgomery City, Missouri; two daughters, Terry (Dennis) Reiners of Waterloo and Sue (Tony) Jones of Evansdale; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Floyd Appleby of Waterloo and Claridon "Sonny" Appleby of Chicago; and a sister, Myrtle Laycox of Fisher, Arkansas.

Preceded in death by: a grandson, Tony Jones, Jr.; a brother, Bill Appleby; and a sister, Lula Oestereich.
