Visitation:
Friday, May 29, 2015 and an hour prior to the services on Saturday at the American Lutheran Church

Cemetery:
Saturday in Council Hill Cemetery in rural McGregor, Iowa, with full military honors

Biography--

Roger W. Thompson, age 78, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Covenant Medical Center following a heart attack.

He was born July 1, 1936, in rural Clayton County, Iowa, the son of Kenneth and Effie Thompson. Roger graduated from Monona (IA) High School and served in the Wisconsin National Guard. He was united in marriage with Bonnie Wilkins on October 19, 1954 in Monona.

Roger worked for many years in agriculture including farming, delivering fertilizer, feed and seed and other duties. He was a firefighter and an emergency medical technician (EMT) for over 30 years with the La Porte City Fire Department and also served as Chief of the Department for several years. He was a member of the Iowa Fireman’s Association and the American Lutheran Church in La Porte City.

Roger never met a stranger. He enjoyed visiting and he cared about helping others in his community. He was fond of the outdoors, spending time working on projects and caring for his yard. Roger loved children and treasured time spent with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of La Porte City; a daughter, Denise (Jeff Gryczewski) Thompson of Schertz, TX; a son, Kevin (Julie) Thompson of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Amanda (Steve) Junkman of New Mexico, Ashley Thompson of Cedar Falls, Sadie Thompson and Steven Thompson, of Des Moines; three great grandchildren, Laney, Myra and Emery; two brothers, Virgil (Mary Lou) Thompson and Dick (Barb) Thompson all of Monona and a sister, Karen Severn of Roscoe, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
