Biography--

Marie Katherine (Beyer) Schmeidel, age 93, died on Wednesday June 24, 2015 at NorthCrest Specialty Care, Waterloo, Iowa.

Marie was born on August 19, 1921, in Portland, Oregon, the first of five children born to Rev. John A. C. and Martha (Schulze) Beyer. The family moved to Minnesota in 1923 when her father accepted a call to be a Minister to the Deaf in St. Paul. Minnesota. Upon graduating from Central High School, she attended Mounds Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, receiving her nursing degree in 1943. A friend talked her into enlisting in the Army Nurse Corps; there was a great need for nurses during World War II. The friend backed out of the deal to get married but Marie fulfilled her enlistment. After basic training at Ft. Carson, CO, and Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, she was assigned to the 217th General Hospital as a general duty nurse, serving in England and France. First Lieutenant Beyer was discharged at Camp Sibert, Alabama on 19 December 1945. When asked what they did when she arrived home, she said, “We came home and went to sleep.”

On June 8, 1946, she married Wilbur C. Schmeidel in St. Paul, Minnesota. For a short time after her marriage, she was a nurse at Glen Lake Sanitarium (for tuberculosis). In 1959, the family of five moved from Hopkins, MN, to Lake Mills, IA and grew to love the small town and its people. Soon after coming to Waterloo in 1965, Marie became the office nurse for Dr. Richard Acker and later for Dr. Richard Corton. She retired in 1987 and then devoted more time to needlework, gardening and various women’s groups at Grace Lutheran Church. On May 10, 2011, Marie went on an Honor Flight to Washington D. C., which she greatly enjoyed. After returning from the Honor Flight she said, “I’ll remember that for the rest of my life.”

Marie is survived by three children, Kathie (David) Simon, Bartlesville, OK, Paul Schmeidel, Enid, OK, Al (Donna) Schmeidel, Waterloo; seven granddaughters, and 13 great grandchildren; her brother, Dr. David Beyer, Hillsboro, TX, and a sister, Carol Deitrick, of North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sisters, Ruth Courtney and Dorothy Nelson.
