Biography--

Richard G. “Dick” Ede, 81, of Dunkerton, died at St. Mary's Campus at the Mayo Clinic, on Friday July 10, 2015.

Richard was born January 5, 1934 in Waterloo, the son of Lynn and Hazel Smith Ede.

He married Mary McCusker May 21, 1955, and they were later divorced. He then married Joy Marie Sinnard October 1, 1979 in Waterloo. She preceded him in death March 15, 2007.

Mr. Ede attended East Waterloo #8 School and graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1951.

Dick worked for John Deere & Company for 37 1/2 years, retiring July 31, 1992. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Dunkerton Chamber of Commerce, served several terms on the Dunkerton city council, and was on the telephone board, community hall board, and park board, all in Dunkerton.

Dick served two terms as mayor of Dunkerton from 1998 to 2001. In addition, he served as treasurer for First Baptist Church in Dunkerton and was the AWANA commander. Mr. Ede worked at the Waterloo Women’s Club, retiring in 1992. He was the safety director for Hauptly Construction from 1992 to 1997 and for WBC Mechanical Inc. in Waterloo from 2001 to 2011. Richard also was involved with Hawkeye Valley on Aging and Meals on Wheels. He served on the Black Hawk County election board. Dick was also a master gardener.

Richard is survived by four sons, James (Sandy) Ede of Waterloo, John Ede of Missouri, Joseph Ede of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Thomas (Hillary) Ede of Harpers Ferry, IA; three daughters: Susan (Timothy) Regenold of Coos Bay, Oregon, Lynne (Mitchell) Campbell of Waterloo, and Holly (Alex) Oliva of Frisco, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Joyce Brooks of Lakeland, Florida.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; one brother, Roy Ede; and two sisters: Mildred Fowlkes and Doris Lentz.
