Clarence Albert “Al” Frerichs

January 31, 1930 - February 6, 2015

Funeral Services will be held later this summer in Minnesota.

Clarence Albert “Al” Frerichs was born on January 31, 1930 in Holland, Iowa, the son of John and Sophie (Sherfield) Frerichs. He graduated from East Waterloo High School in 1948. Al served with the United States Navy earning an honorable discharge. He attended Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa. After UNI, Al attended Law School at the University of Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Kathleen Perry on December 2, 1960; she preceded him in death on December 15, 2001. Al practiced Law in Waterloo, and was a very accomplished lawyer. He practiced many years with partners Joe Nutting and Bob Fulton, later including Jerald Martin, Robert Andres and his son Tom.

Al was an ACLU lawyer in Mississippi in 1964. He was active in numerous political campaigns, including for John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. He retired in 1996. Al was an avid tennis player and won the Missouri Valley Regional Doubles Championships a number of times with his doubles partner Bill Lane. He most enjoyed spending time at his lake house in Minnesota with his family.

Al passed away on Friday, February 6, 2015 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home at the age of 85.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Kathleen; three brothers: John Frerichs, Tom Frerichs and Carroll Frerichs; two sisters, Katherine DuFrene and Minnette Doderer and two nieces.

Al is survived by two sons, David (Traci) Frerichs of Overland Park, Kansas and Tom Frerichs of Waterloo; two daughters, Susan Elaine (Jerry) Gray of Lake City, Colorado and Jane Frerichs-Frank of Waterloo; nine grandchildren: Nick Frank of Houston, Texas, Zach Frerichs of Lawrence, Kansas Scott Frerichs of Cedar Falls, Jessica Frerichs of Overland Park, Kansas; Abigail Frerichs of Iowa City; Chad Gray of Denver, Colorado, Mike Gray of Dewey, Arizona, Josh Gray of Lake City Colorado and Colin Gray of Kittridge, Colorado; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two nephews: John Frerichs and Dennis Doderer and two nieces: Chad DuFrene and Kimberly Frerichs.

Memorials may be directed to the Big Birch Lake Association, through the family.
