Ray Sylvester Harris

May 27, 1927 - April 23, 2015

Ray Sylvester Harris was born May 27, 1927, in Shell Rock, Iowa, son of Arthur and Elsie (Howe) Harris. He and his eight siblings grew up farming. He met Phyllis Wiseman at a movie matinee and asked her for a date. The two wed on May 10, 1952 in Waterloo. Together they raised four children. Ray worked for Rath packing plant for 30 years retiring in 1985.

Ray loved his family, fishing, swimming, flower and vegetable gardening, and movies. Through the years he served as a leader for the Boy Scouts of America and was active in his church. He particularly enjoyed taking his children and grandchildren roller skating.

Ray passed away at the age of 87 years on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the Elizabeth E. Martin Center in Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Phyllis; son-in-law Gary Lane and three brothers and five sisters. Ray is survived by his son Raymond Harris of Raymond, Iowa; three daughters Nancy (Floyd) McElhaney of Waterloo; Peggy (Duane) Miller of Shafer, MN and Mary Lane of Chisago City, MN; six grandchildren: Andy (Kim) McElhaney, Alynn (Ryan) Reuter, Reed Harris, Rachael (Kyle) Moon, Lukas Lane and Randall Lane; and six great-grandchildren: Mitchell, Dakota, Brandon, Kalib, Tucker and Alivia.
