Mariah Hawkins Little

January 16, 1930 to May 19, 2015

Mother Mariah (Hawkins) Little was born January 16, 1930 in Durant, Mississippi. She is the youngest child of Elizabeth (nee Wade) and Willie Hawkins. Christianity was the centerpiece of the Hawkins family and early in life Mariah became an active member of the Bowling Green Baptist Church. She heeded God’s call on Tuesday, May 19, and joined her parents, her brothers: Donald, Joe, Willie D., Willie Jr., O.D. and Ezra, as well as her sisters: Connie, Lemmie, Mittie, and Earlest.

Mother Little graduated (as class Salutatorian) from Holmes County Training School in Durant, MS on May 1948. She traveled to Chicago, IL where she met Clyde Roby, whom she married in September, 1949. On June 23, 1950, they were blessed with one son, Clyde Barnett Roby. The couple later divorced and Mariah returned to Mississippi. There she attended the Mississippi Vocational College in Itta Bena, Mississippi.

After completing an internship at the Natchez Charity Hospital she obtained a nursing degree in 1957. She returned to Chicago, where she worked in various hospitals, including Cook County Hospital, Presbyterian, and St. Luke.

Mother Little met a wonderful man and gave her hand in marriage to Elder Mozell Little and they moved to Waterloo, Iowa.

She immediately united with the New Bethany Church of God in Christ. After his passing, her devotion to her Christian life, and the churches to which later became affiliated, never faltered as she continued to work with a number of churches in the Waterloo area establishing building fund clubs while continuing her nursing career at Allen Hospital.

Mother Little possessed many talents, such as cooking, all forms of sewing (especially quilting), singing, and homemaking ranked high. Care giving, however, was Mariah’s spiritual calling. She tirelessly demonstrated this calling in ministering to her husband (before his passing), her son, her family, friends and associates. Nicknamed the Mother of Many, Mother Little nurtured a number of young people who, for various reasons, entered her environment.

Cherishing her memory is her sons, Clyde Barnett Roby, (step-sons) Garret Roby of Michigan; Milton (Yolanda) Roby of Michigan City, IN, Terry Roby and Jarvis Roby of Ben Harbor, MI. Step-daughter: Corrine Roby of Detroit, MI. Three sister-in-laws: Eddie Brown, Elder John (Mahalja) Guess, Albert (Evangelist Eula) Guess of Freeport, IL, Joshua (Jo) Guess of Parish, CA. Extended (son’s aunts) Ethyl Logan, Modeen Finch, Cynthia Godson, Lillie Powell, Wanda Powell, Johnny (Gwendolyn) Powell, of Milwaukee, WI and Terry Powell of California. Five grandchildren: Clyde (Rasheedah) Roby, Jr., Troy R. Roby, Julian D. Roby, Keisha Jones, and Ashley Martin. Eight great grandchildren: Derrick Jones, Shamella Roby, Tiondra Roby, Triston Roby, Serena Martin, Jniah Martin, Jandysia Martin, Aterea Roby, and Julian Roby, Jr. Also, the Bruce brothers & family and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and also my “special sons” Charles Pugh, Charles Seawood, and Billy Davis.
