WATERLOO, IOWA – Wayne Harold Eisele, 96, of Waterloo, died July 15, 2015, at his home. He was born June 1, 1919 near Malcom, Iowa, son of George and Ida Mae Freese Eisele. He married Bernice Sarah Vogt on Nov. 28, 1946 in Waterloo, IA.

Wayne graduated from Barnes City High School in 1938. He was active in sports and was recognized as an outstanding state basketball player. Wayne’s passion for sports continued throughout his life and he enjoyed skiing and played basketball, volleyball, tennis, softball, and horseshoes as an adult. He also attended and supported Columbus High School sporting events for many years.

In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, Wayne was an amateur motorcycle racer in the Expert Class. He also participated in hill-climbing competitions. Wayne loved being outdoors! He built his own campers for family vacations. Wayne spent many enjoyable hours camping, fishing or riding his 10-speed bicycle.

He completed Ragbrai, an annual bike ride across Iowa, 28 times until the age of 78. An avid traveler, Wayne took his family on many road trips across the United States and Canada. He also traveled to Europe.

He worked as a welder, mechanic and fabricator for 41 years at John Deere retiring from their Engineering Center on March 13, 1981. Wayne, then, continued on with John Deere as a tour guide until the late 1990’s.

He was a skilled craftsman and built the original Eisele family home on Monroe St. Wayne also built and refurbished many items including furniture, a grandfather clock and a pool table for the family home. In addition, he developed several versions of a toy loader, which eventually earned him a display at the National Farm Toy Museum in Dyersville, Iowa. Furthermore, Wayne created a line of bicycle rear-view mirrors to alert riders to traffic approaching them from behind.

Preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Earl Eisele, Raymond Eisele, Frances Cerny and Alvin Eisele.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Eisele; children: Jerry (Jane) Eisele of Bushnell, IL.; Barbara Eisele of New Hope, MN.; Mike (Deb) Eisele of Tipton, Iowa.; Mary (Dave) Eisele Slack of Plymouth, MN.; grandchildren: Alan (Karen) Eisele, Krysta (Kyle) Crandall, Travis (Rebecca) Eisele, Erik Eisele, Tara Eisele, Anthony Slack and John Slack; and great-grandchildren: Luke Eisele, Pierce John Crandall, Grant Crandall, Gideon Eisele and Abraham Eisele.

Memorials: May be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Columbus High School’s Athletic Department.
