Mercedes Mary Stewart, 93, of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of Gilbertville, Iowa, died Monday, December 8, at The Maples Nursing and Rehabilitation, Springfield.
She was born August 31, 1921 in Washburn, daughter of Francis M. and Magdalen Kemp Nugent. She married Harold L. Stewart Sept. 15, 1945 in Camp Swift, Texas. He died Dec. 1999.
Mercedes graduated from high school and nursing school, both in Waterloo. She was a registered nurse in the Army Nurse Corps and later with Rath Packing Co., retiring in 1954.
Survived by: a son, Greg Stewart of Springfield, Missouri; a grandson, Michael Stewart of Springfield, Missouri.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Leo Nugent; a sister, Patricia Friedl
Services will be Friday, Dec.12 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Military rites will be conducted by Nugent Demuth American Legion Post 714. Visitation will be for one hour before services at the church on Friday. The casket will be closed.
