LaVerne E. “Nick” Nicol, 94, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Sunday, December 14, at his home.

He was born December 28, 1919, in Waverly, son of Earl and Vesta Van Dorn Nicol. He married Marcella Barton on October 18, 1943 in Waterloo. She died November 13, 2011.

LaVerne graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1938. He and his wife owned and operated Mid State Reproduction and Supply and Arts N’ Crafts. He was a veteran of U. S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas (Linnea) Nicol of Cedar Falls and Tony (Pam) Nicol of Elk Run Heights; six daughters: Marla Rogers and Mary Nicol, both of Cedar Falls, Maureen (John) Beckman and Sue Card of Waterloo, Kelli (Roger) Harris of Byhalia, Mississippi and Neuza (George) Gartin of Springfield, Missouri; 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: two daughters in infancy, Evelyn and Karen; a son, Todd Nicol; a grandson, Jeremy Nicol; and a son-in-law, David E. Rogers.

Services will be Friday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo Amvets Post 19, Evansdale Amvets Post 31 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. Legion Of Mary rosary. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to the church, Cedar Valley Hospice or the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

Nick was a long time member of the Optimist Club. He enjoyed fishing with the grandkids and puttering in his flower gardens. His favorite times were with family and friends.
