Tunis E. Den Hartog

April 28, 1924 - December 22, 2014

Tunis E. Den Hartog, 90, of Waterloo, died Monday, December 22, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born April 28, 1924 in Eddyville, son of Bastian Willem and Margaret Van Dyk Den Hartog. He married Marilyn M. Brown on October 21, 1943 in Waterloo. She died September 23, 2000.

Tunis graduated Washington High School in Washington, Iowa in 1941. He attended Gates Business College from 1942 to 1943, receiving a Business Administration Degree. He passed the Uniform C.P.A. examination in November of 1949.

He was employed with John G. Miller Construction from 1943 to 1944, John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works in 1945, Carney-Lynch Co., C.P.A.’s from 1946 to 1950. He became a partner of Stover-Den Hartog Co., C.P.A.’s on July 7, 1950 and retired from Den Hartog & Hogan Co., C.P.A.’s in 1972. He became employed with MidAmerica Savings (formerly Home Savings & Loan) on July 1, 1973, retiring as President in 1987.

He served as a member of the board, trustee and/or officer of the following organizations: Airport Area Development Authority, Black Hawk County Abstract Co., Boone County Abstract Co., Brown Lumber Co., Cedar Bend Humane Society, Columbus High School, Corporate Consultants, Inc., Fahr Beverage, Inc., Freedom Banking, Inc., Group III, Ltd., Homesave Corp., Iowa Society of C. P. A.,s, Iowa Transfer Systems, Inc., Jasper County Abstract Co., Jaycees, Junior Achievement of Black Hawk Land, Klawitter Distributing Co., Matt Parrott & Sons Co., MidAmerica Savings Bank, National Association of Cost Accountants, Properties, Ltd., Realty Services, Inc., RSVP, St. Francis Health Care Foundation, Sunnyside Country Club, Two-O-One, Inc., Warren Transport, Inc., Waterloo Airport Commission, Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, The Greater Waterloo Foundation, Waterloo Club, Waterloo Visiting Nurses Assocation, Waverly Publishing Co.

He was also a member of the following community organizations: Sertoma, Rotary Club, FNAS, Exhausted Roosters, St. Edward’s Church, St. Mary’s Church, Holy Name Society, B.P.O.E. Elks and was Community Advisor of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Junior League.

He was Finance Chairman of the Columbus High Fund Drive in 1957-1958, Chairman of Governor’s Task Force Committee, Cash management for the Iowa Board of Regents in 1984. He was inducted into the Columbus High School Hall of Fame and received the Junior Achievement National Bronze Leadership Award. He was the Spirit of America Heart Volunteer – U.S. Treasury Department and twice received a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Waterloo. He received the Iowa Mediation Service Award, the State of Iowa Merit Award, Sam Walton Business Leader Award, Matt Parrott Integrity Award, the Dedicated Service Award from AARP Tax Aid Program and the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce Private Citizen of the Year Award. He was a 2005 Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa Business Hall of Fame Recipient. He was recognized by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier 2010 “8 Over 80 Class”.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Ann (Phil) Bazzano of Fulton, California and Diane Marie (Dennis) Hinders of Marion; two sons, Thomas Eugene (Lisa) Den Hartog of Cedar Falls and William Warren Den Hartog of Jacksonville, Florida; 10 grandchidren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Marion (Joan) Den Hartog of Clovis, California.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; a grandson; and a brother, John Den Hartog.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with inurnment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Columbus High School.
