James Francis Freet

April 21, 1938 - February 19, 2015

James “Jim” Francis Freet, 76, died peacefully at home on February 19, 2015.

Jim was born on April 21, 1938, outside Gilbertville, Iowa, to Albert and Dorothy Phillips Freet.

Jim attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and then graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1955. Jim went on to Loras College that fall and graduated four years later with a B.S. in Mathematics. Jim began a brief teaching career in New Sharon, Iowa. Two years later he enlisted in the United States Navy. Jim served 10 years in the Navy, serving much of this time aboard submarines in the Pacific Ocean while being stationed in California and Texas. During this time Jim married Lorraine Bornong on August 21, 1965.

Upon leaving the Navy, Jim returned to Iowa where he pursued class work in data processing at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. He then worked for 25 years in the banking and data processing profession. In 1996, he retired from the National Bank of Waterloo, later Regions Bank, serving as Senior Vice-President of Data Processing for much of this time.

Spiritualism, faith and service were a cornerstone of Jim’s life. Jim began serving as an altar boy in his early years and then became a Catholic lay leader aboard submarines. He was ordained as a permanent deacon of the Archdiocese of Dubuque in 1986, where he served the Blessed Sacrament Community and much of the Archdiocese by preaching, performing baptisms and marriages. Jim was very active in service life to the Cedar Valley area providing service to the Hospitality House, Meals on Wheels, Community Meal, Cedar Aids Support System, and the Burmese Community.

Jim is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lorraine, three daughters, Catherine (Andrew) Nicholas of Denver, IA, Monica Freet of Iowa City, and Anne (Tim) Weber of Iowa City; three sons, Joseph (Pam) Freet of Spring Valley, MN, Daniel Freet (Brian Blackburne) of Houston, TX and Patrick (Stephanie Schroeder) Freet of Minneapolis, MN; eight grandchildren Ethan and Lauren Nicholas, Sarah and Lily Freet, Keely, Teegan, and Joseph Weber and Oliver Schroeder Freet; one brother, Donald (Linda) Freet of Gilbertville, three sisters-in-law, Barb Freet of Jesup, Bonnie Moore of Marion , IA, Mary (Bill) Kreger of Evansdale, IA; and a brother-in-law, Ken (Jan) Bornong of Gilbertville, IA.

James was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Richard Freet and John Charles, who died in infancy and two brothers-in-law Richard Bornong and Terry Moore.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Nugent-Demuth Post 714 of Gilbertville. Public visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also for an hour preceding services at the church on Tuesday. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
