Biography--

Charlotte Ann (Kuhl) Nelson, 98, died May 12 at Bethany-Riverside Nursing Facility in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

She was born January 19, 1917, in Alton, daughter of John and Marie Scheuring Kuhl, the youngest of five children. She married Percy Theodore Nelson October 6, 1952 in Waterloo. He died December 9, 1988.

Charlotte graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Alton in 1935 and Creighton Memorial St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Omaha in 1938. After completing additional training at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, she worked as a surgical nurse in Chicago, Ottumwa, Iowa, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Denver, Colorado, and finally at St Francis Hospital from 1948 to 1954. She continued her professional career, working as an emergency room nurse at St. Francis/Covenant Medical Center until her retirement in 1982.

A member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church, she was active in the women's circle, helping with funerals and other special events. She volunteered for many years at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, Ravenwood Care Center Auxiliary and knitting baby stocking caps for the Covenant nursery.

She is survived by her daughter Juliann Nelson-Duffy (Ron Duffy) of Roseville, Minn; son Martin Nelson (Mary Ann Phalen) of La Crosse, Wis; grandchildren Sarah (Andy) Pierson of Baudette, Minn., Karen Duffy of Roseville, Minn. and Emmett Nelson of La Crosse, Wis; great-granddaughter Molly Pierson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, John, and her brothers and sister, Everett, Joseph, John, and Loretta Groff and their spouses.

Services will be Tuesday at St. Edward Catholic Church with burial in Mt Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be for one hour before services at the church. Hagarty–Waychoff–Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, 1605 Lafayette St, P.O. Box 2397, Waterloo, IA 50704-2397.

Charlotte was a quiet woman with a generous heart. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed. The family would like to thank the staff of Bethany-Riverside and Ridgeway Place in Waterloo for their compassionate care during the past year.
