Virgil G. De Groote

September 10, 1930 - June 8, 2015

Virgil G. De Groote, 84, of Ackley, formerly of Waterloo, died Monday, June 8, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born September 10, 1930, in Fort Dodge, the son of Ray and Irene Buscher De Groote. He married Norita Timmer on June 2, 1962, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Waterloo and she died April 17, 1980.

Virgil served in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the S.S. Philipine Seas Aircraft Carrier. He was employed as a tool and die maker at John Deere retiring on September 30, 1987.

Survivors include: two sons, Christopher (Jamie) De Groote of Rapid City, South Dakota and Curtis (Sherry) De Groote of Waterloo; three daughters, Karen (Rick Johnson) De Groote of Aplington, Theresa (Bob Duncan) De Groote of Arvada, Colorado, and Sharon (Stefan Hertweck) De Groote of Baden-Baden, Germany; nine grandchildren, Sierra De Groote, Savannah De Groote, Shaden De Groote, Alyssa Johnson, Ricky Johnson, Ben De Groote, Kyle De Groote, Lukas Hertweck, and Alexandra De Groote Duncan; two brothers, Marvin (Judy) De Groote of Waterloo and Gary Petrie of Manchester; a sister, Carol (Merril) Marr of Waterloo; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Dr. Kenneth De Groote.

Services: 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 15, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets Post 31. Public visitation from 3-7 P.M. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 6 P.M. vigil service. Visitation also one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice
Virgil was an avid hunter and fisherman and retired to his beloved Timberridge, his 140 acre timber farm and wildlife refuge.
