Robert Joseph Gilbert

October 11, 1928 - June 29, 2015

Robert Joseph Gilbert, 86, of Waterloo, died Monday, June 29, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center from Parkinson’s disease and complications of pneumonia.

He was born October 11, 1928 in Waterloo, son of Burton Joseph and Marguerite Hackbarth Gilbert. He married Jolene Ann Lonie July 8, 1951 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Waterloo.

Robert graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1947. He was a US Navy veteran serving in the Korean War. He was employed with Weyerhauser Paper Company for 33 years, retiring in 1991.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Michael Thomas (Vicki) of Cedar Falls, Gary Lee (Michelle) of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Damian (Angie) Gilbert, Monica (Brian) Sundt and Ryan Gilbert of Waterloo and Nicole Gilbert of Jacksonville, Fla. four great-granddaughters, Cile, Kira, Caitlyn and Zoe Gilbert; four great-grandsons, Shawn, Dupri, Joshua and Elijah Gilbert; his stepmother, Wilma “Billie” Gilbert of Waterloo; eight step-sisters, Norma (David) Lemker of Atkins, Helen (James) Wagner, Kathryn (Michael) Joblinske and Paula Hildman all of Waterloo, Kimberly (Stephen) Luebbers of Tripoli, Dawn (David) Neighbors of Jefferson City, Mo. Donna (Daniel) Webb of Cedar Falls and Mary Ann (Roland) Reinard of Washburn; six step-brothers, Louis (Rebecca) Hildman of Pensacola, Fla., Mark (Kathleen) Hildman and Anthony (Sharon) Hildman of Waterloo, Robert (Kristy) Hildman of Cedar Falls, Troy (Susan) Hildman of Kings Port, Tenn. and Eric (Ivory) Hildman of Mesa, Ariz.; two aunts, Helen Gilbert and Roberta (Douglas) Jacobson of Waterloo and four nieces and two nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Services will be on Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623 and the US Navy Honor Guard.

Public visitation will be on Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Parkinson’s Association.

Robert enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, hunting and working in his wood shop.
