Ruth Ann Hoffer

January 31, 1927 - August 12, 2015

Ruth A. Hoffer, 88, died Wednesday, August 12, at her home.

She was born January 31, 1927 in Waterloo, daughter of Albert Joseph and Gertrude Louise Goetz Hoffer.

Ruth graduated from St. Mary’s School in 1945. She began nurses training at St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Macomb, Illinois. She attended Western College in Macomb, Illinois, and also attended school in Peoria, Illinois. She graduated from nursing school in 1948 with her RN degree. She worked at St. Francis Hospital and Visiting Nurses Association for thirty-eight years, retiring in December of 1990. Ruth was a United States Air Force veteran, during the Korean War, serving as a 2nd Lieutenant.

She is survived by a brother, Paul (Georgia) Hoffer of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; six nephews, Jim Hoffer of Evansdale, John Hoffer and Brian (Chris) Steen both of Waterloo, Larry (Stephanie) Hoffer of Brandon, Paul J. and Michael Hoffer, both of Mississippi; eleven nieces, Jeani (Craig) Riechmann of Independence, Janice (Jack) Hoffman of Evansdale, Betty Binard, Barbara (Mark) Rust, Brenda (Jack) Henniger all of Waterloo, Sherrie (Kelly) VanDyke of Jesup, Mary Ann (James) Monroe of Canada, Paulette Ziegfield of Cleveland, Pat (Dan) Foster of Iowa City, Mickey (Merlyn) Goodson of Mo. and Frances (James) Grigsby of Louisiana; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Steen of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Edward, John and Robert; three sisters-in-law, Agnes Hoffer, Donna Hoffer and Helen Hoffer; two nephews, Tom Hoffer and Steve Bard.

Services will be Wednesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale Amvets Post 31, Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and the U. S. Air Force Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4pm Legion of Mary rosary and a 7pm vigil. Visitation also one hour preceding services at the church on Wednesday.
